Choosing the Right Bottle Nipple & Pacifier: Supporting Healthy Oral Motor Development

When parents prepare for a new baby, choosing bottles and pacifiers can quickly become overwhelming! With so many options available, it's easy to assume they're all essentially the same. However, the shape of a bottle nipple or pacifier can have a meaningful impact on your baby's oral motor development, feeding skills, and latch.
At Bluegrass Pediatric Therapies, we recommend choosing feeding tools that support natural oral movement patterns and encourage healthy development from the very beginning.
Why Shape Matters
A baby's tongue, lips, cheeks, and jaw all work together during feeding. The goal is to encourage a deep latch and coordinated sucking pattern. Bottle nipples with a gradual, tapered slope allow the tongue to cup around the nipple more
naturally. This promotes:
A deeper latch
Better tongue elevation and cupping
More efficient milk transfer
Reduced compensatory feeding patterns
Improved oral motor skill development
Because babies must actively use their oral muscles to feed, nipple shape can influence how those muscles develop over time.
Our Bottle Recommendations
When possible, we recommend bottles with a gradually sloped nipple, such as:
Dr. Brown's Narrow (our favorite)
Lansinoh Natural Flow
Evenflo Balance+
GentleFlow+

What About Pacifiers?
Pacifiers can also influence oral motor development.
We generally recommend conical-shaped pacifiers because they:
Encourage a deeper latch
Promote tongue cupping
Provide a more stable surface for the tongue to work against
Support lip flanging and open-mouth positioning
One of our favorite options is the Ninni Co Pacifier, which was designed to closely mimic breastfeeding while encouraging healthy sucking patterns. Many infant feeding therapists and lactation consultants appreciate its soft, wide base and hospital-grade silicone design.

Every Baby Is Different
While these recommendations work well for many infants, every baby has unique feeding needs. Some babies with oral motor challenges, tongue restrictions, prematurity, or other medical conditions may benefit from different bottle systems or nipple styles. For example, some infants demonstrating
oral motor dysfunction may feed more successfully with Pigeon nipples or other specialty feeding systems.
If your baby is struggling with...
Difficulty latching
Long feeding times
Clicking while feeding
Milk leaking from the mouth
Frequent coughing or choking
Poor weight gain
Frustration during feeds
...an evaluation with a pediatric feeding therapist can help identify the underlying cause and provide individualized recommendations.
The Bottom Line
The "best" bottle or pacifier is one that supports your baby's ability to feed safely, efficiently, and comfortably while promoting healthy oral motor development. Choosing a gradual-sloped bottle nipple, a slow flow rate, and a developmentally supportive pacifier can help establish strong feeding skills that serve as the foundation for future eating and oral development.
